, ,The Georgia Institute of Technology invites applications and nominations for the position of Vice President for Interdisciplinary Research (VPIR). Reporting to the Executive Vice President for Research (EVPR), the VPIR is a senior level administrator responsible for various aspects of interdisciplinary research and serves on the EVPR’s leadership team. This position is an academic faculty position appointed at 50 to 75 percent time.
Position Scope and Responsibilities
The VPIR is responsible for ensuring the effective and strategic administration of interdisciplinary research. This includes responsibility for: the Interdisciplinary Research Institutes and Centers (IRIs and IRCs); the Pediatric Technology Center (PTC); the Global Center for Medical Innovation; the Smart Cities Initiatives; the grant hatchery program, research faculty integration and the GTRI/RI relationship, and other interdisciplinary research initiatives and activities which may emerge in the future.
The Vice President advises the EVPR on matters related to interdisciplinary research strategy and collaborates with vice presidents/provosts, deans, members of the President’s cabinet, school chairs, and associate deans and associate chairs for research to ensure that interdisciplinary research activities meet the highest standard of excellence and are supported in pursuit of Georgia Tech’s strategic research goals.
Specific responsibilities of the VPIR include but are not limited to:
- Assist the EVPR and colleges with strategy and operational support for interdisciplinary research.
- Provide oversight, direction and support to the operations and ongoing activities of the Interdisciplinary Research Institutes and Centers (IRIs and IRCs); the Pediatric Technology Center (PTC); the Global Center for Medical Innovation; the Smart Cities Initiatives, in consultation with the EVPR.
- Oversee and manage the cross unit grant hatchery program. Manage the limited submission process in selecting which proposal will represent Georgia Tech, in consultation with the EVPR.
- Develop procedures and policies to further support and facilitate interdisciplinary research activities.
- Represent the Office of the EVRP, as appropriate, to various internal constituencies, as well as externally to agencies, institutions, and organizations.
Position Qualifications
Applications will be accepted from members of the academic faculty of Georgia Institute of Technology preference will be given to tenured faculty members. Applicants should have a strong record of scholarship as well as evidence of success in administrative leadership roles. The ideal candidate will be familiar with issues in higher education in general and university research specifically; be an intellectual leader among the faculty; a strong advocate for research, faculty and students; an energetic and conscientious administrator; and demonstrate a commitment to inclusion and diversity. Further, he/she will promote the Institute’s Strategic Plan and work as an integral member of the EVPR’s and Institute leadership team to further the Institute’s vision, mission, and goals.
This position is a year-round faculty position appointed at 50 to 75 percent time (percent time of appointment, workload, and terms will be determined in consultation with the selected individual and their home department supervisor).
