Mathematics Learning Specialist

(Non-Tenure Track Academic Faculty)

The Center for Academic Success (CAS) and School of Mathematics at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) invite applications and nominations for the position of Mathematics Learning Specialist. This is a 12-month, non-tenure track academic faculty position.  The exact rank will depend on the highest degree earned and relevant professional experience. The position reports to the Director of the Center for Academic Success with an additional reporting line to the Chair of the School of Mathematics. The person in this position will be responsible for teaching learning support math and pre-calculus courses as well as participating in tutoring, academic support, and peer learning activities related to undergraduate math courses. Responsibilities:  Specific responsibilities are as follows:

Teaching and Curriculum Development (63%)

• Teach 9 credit hours each fall and spring semester (exact courses may vary based on demand)
  • 1 section of LS 0398 (3-credits): Mathematical Skills
  • 1 section of Math 0399 (2-credits): Support for pre-calculus
  • 1 section of Math 1113 (4-credits): pre-calculus
• Consult regularly with School of Mathematics to ensure academic support and tutorial services in CAS and SOM are coordinated and complementary.
• Follow School of Mathematics (SOM) recommended learning goals for MATH 1113, to match GT Calculus demands.
• Ensure coordination between LS courses and MATH 1113, in cooperation with CAS and SOM and connect students in these courses with appropriate tutorial resources at Georgia Tech.
• Ensure that the curriculum of the LS math courses meet USG and Georgia Tech policies and requirements.

Academic Support and Learning Assistance for Mathematics (37%)

As time permits, the position will assist with curricular and academic support related to mathematics within CAS.  Examples of responsibilities may include and will be determined in coordination with the Director of CAS:

• Provide individual and group tutoring and academic support services for pre‑calculus and calculus
• Develop and deliver workshops and other outreach programs that are designed to improve learning of mathematics among
• Assist with the supplemental instruction (PLUS) program for mathematics courses
• Assist with the selection, training, and supervision of peer tutors
• Assist with the Tech Prep program (including curriculum development; workshop facilitation; and pre-calculus and calculus instruction)
• Serve on committees and task forces
• Participate as a member of the CAS staff, involved in all aspects of the center
• Participate in professional development to be knowledgeable of current research in the learning and instruction of
• Other duties as assigned by the Director of CAS

Required Education and Experience

• D. or doctorate in mathematics or in a related field with 18 graduate hours in math is preferred; Master’s degree in mathematics or in a related field and 18 graduate hours in math
• Understanding of learning support pedagogy
• Demonstrated familiarization with best practices in tutoring and academic support, particularly focused on undergraduate mathematics courses
• Demonstrated ability to instruct learning support and pre-calculus courses
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Demonstrated ability to use instructional technology
• Skill and knowledge to productively engage with diverse communities
